The Tech Shock podcast – money muling
In this episode, Vicki and Geraldine are joined by Tracey Carpenter of Cifas – the organisation responsible for the UK’s fraud database – to discuss the increasing number of children playing a role in fraud.
Children are often more aware of their family’s financial situation than we give them credit for. This episode looks at how children might be drawn towards ‘easy’ (but fraudulent) money-making schemes, especially during the current cost of living crisis.
‘Money muling’ is a form of money laundering; it’s where someone lets another use their bank account to ‘clean’ dirty money. But are these behaviours on the rise, and with a strong financial incentive to be a money mule, Vicki and Geraldine ask how easy it is to coerce and exploit children.
Finally, this episode unpacks some of the consequences of being added to the UK fraud database as a young person, as well as the links between committing fraud and other, more severe forms of criminal activity.
