The Tech Shock Podcast - Jonathan Baggaley

This week Vicki and Geraldine welcome Jonathan Baggaley, a returning guest to the Tech Shock Podcast and chief executive of the PSHE Association. They discuss relationships, sex and health education (RSHE) and why it’s under fire.

The RSHE curriculum, which was made compulsory for UK pupils in 2019, has recently come under scrutiny. A report has called for a review of the subject, while one MP labelled it as ‘age-inappropriate’, ‘sexualising’, and ‘inaccurate’ in the House of Commons.

Despite this, Baggaley says that “90% of parents, teachers, children and young people” believe that education on the subject should be statutory. So why the kick-back now, especially in parliament?

In this week’s episode of Tech Shock, the group further discuss RSHE and the important role that it can play in the online age. They also ask – with YouGov showing that 24% of young men agree with Andrew Tate’s misogynistic views – how education surrounding relationships and wellbeing can help young people navigate today's world – one which is increasingly driven by algorithms and challenging narratives.
