Be Internet Legends by Google, in partnership with Parent Zone, is an Ipsos-evaluated education programme for UK primary schools.
Following the training, children are twice as likely to show an improved understanding of internet safety than those who haven't.*
Getting Started
Be Internet Legends is designed to be easier for you to plan, deliver and track. It 's part of a multi-faceted programme that teaches children the skills and behaviours they need to be safer and more confident online.
There are several ways you can use the programme, and we want you to have the option of choosing what works best for you, your pupils and your school.
But first, let's explain what it's all about...
The Pillars
Central to the programme are five pillars which are home to all the activities:
Be Sharp - Think Before You Share
Children will learn about protecting their online reputation, privacy boundaries, digital footprints and how to ask an adult for help.
Be Alert - Check it’s For Real
Children will learn how to spot when something online is suspicious, misleading or a scam.
Be Secure - And Protect Your Stuff
Children will learn about privacy and security.
Be Kind - Respect Each Other
Children will learn about the power of online positivity by conveying kindness and empathy.
Be Brave - When in Doubt, Discuss
Children will learn about what types of situations need an adult to help with and what they can do if they witness a bullying incident.
Pillar Packs
These are the individual pillars that make up the programme that you can download. They have the associated vocabulary and activities in each pack. Each pillar has up to seven activities; these are mini lessons which we estimate would take around 10-15 minutes to teach.
Sharp, Alert, Secure and Kind have a zone in Interland, the online game that consolidates learning.
Lesson Plans
You can download the lesson plans as fully prepared Google Slide presentations.
There are six lessons for ages 7-9 and six for ages 9-11; the programme teaching guide page has one way these can be distributed.
The lesson plans use activities from one or two pillars and are approximately one-hour long sessions.
All of the key teaching points and questions have been transformed into interactive and engaging slides, with teacher notes for you to use too. You can also share the slides in Google Classroom as a class assignment.
Children with SEND
You can find a scripted lesson presentations and a range of easy to read key words with widgets in editable formats.
Educator Guide
This is exactly the same as in the full download, but to make it easier for you to access, it's available separately. It explains the programme, has vocabulary activities, a letter template for parents, as well as FAQs.
Teaching Guide
If you are looking to integrate Be Internet Legends into your school, this page explores how you can do this in two ways:
- An example medium-term plan showing how activities from the pillars could be distributed across the junior age range.
- An example plan of how the lesson plans can be distributed.
Digital Wellbeing Module
This is a module of lesson plans that help children develop healthy digital habits. There are two lessons for ages 7-9 and two for ages 9-11.
You can use these lessons to introduce digital wellbeing in a PSHE or Health and Wellbeing topic.
Download the Digital Wellbeing Module.
The Full Programme
This is a 173-page pdf for you to download. It contains the educator guide, vocabulary activities, the five pillars and their activities as well as 12 lesson plans and certificates.
Pledge and Certificates
At the back of the full download, and available as a separate download, are certificates for pupils.
You can give pupils a certificate for 'Being an Internet Legend' and they can sign a pledge to stick to the guidelines of the five pillars.
